Exploring Christianity The cost of the course is £45 – bursaries are available and we would not want anyone to be put off by the cost – and is open to all who are interested in deepening their understanding of the Christian Faith. All sessions run on Wednesday and take place in the Hardy Room, Crewkerne Church hall. We begin at 7.30pm and end at 9.00pm.
Heritage Open Days Somerset has many villages whose names seem quaint to modern ears. Haselbury Plucknett is a prime example. Plucknett comes from the name of Alan de Plugenet or Pluqenet, who held the village in the C13. Haselbury? Perhaps you ought to come to our Heritage Open day to answer that historical question and hopefully many others. For Haselbury Plucknett, a lovely Hamstone village just a couple of miles outside Crewkerne, is welcoming visitors, local and countywide, on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September, between 1.00 and 5.30 pm. “We saw the national heritage Open days scheme as an ideal opportunity to share the village’s rich heritage and fascinating history with as many people as possible,” a spokesperson for the organizing committee said. Visitors will have the opportunity to amble around the village on free guided walks and see many of the old properties close-up. On each of the walks there will be the opportunity to sit in a cottage garden and enjoy a cup of tea and a delicious cake. All cakes home-made, of course! The walks begin at St. Michael’s church where there will be a large display explaining much of the village’s fascinating history. There will also be demonstrations of crafts by local craftworkers and weaver. Youngsters have not been forgotten as a cunning Heritage Quiz Trail has been specifically designed for them to follow. An added bonus will be the free car parking in Glebe Field, right in the centre of the village. “This is a unique charity event and we hope the village will be inundated with curious visitors.”
